[edit] EVEN THE CITY THAT FORGETS HIS HISTORY CAN'T ESCAPE TO REMIND
“History is essentially longitudinal, memory essentially vertical. History essentially consists of passing along the event. Being inside the event, memory essentially and above all consists of not leaving it, staying in it and going back through it from within.” – Gilles Deleuze- Spinoza et le problem de l’expression
[edit] Remind To Remember
Los Angeles is probably the world metropolis less conscious about his own history. Los Angeles has been sold for many years as the city where your dreams can become true. El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula needed to be a blank page in order to write so many dreams on it. But, does not already exist hundreds of books about its strange historical process? Why we still call it the city without memory when there are so many scholars and amateurs enthusiasts about it?
My answer is that history consciousness is not the same than memory.
But, is it possible that a city has something called “memory”? The basic process of memory is to create connections between things not longitudinally but vertically.
Memory reminds things. And cities remind things too.
[edit] My Memory
As a recently new arrived Angelino, my City Memory is built basically by memories of other cities where I have lived, specially from Barcelona and Lima. How can be possible that Los Angeles reminds me so often of such different places? Although the first impressions are completly different there should something in its structure that brings them together.
