I was reading a book about labor issues in California for one of my Chicana/ Chicano Studies Clases when I found this passage...

Steinbeck branded the California elite as heartless.

"No one complains at the necessity of feeding a horse while he is not working. But we complain about feeding the men and women who work our lands. Is it possible that this state is so stupid, so vicious, and so greedy that it can not clothe and feed the men and women who help to make it the richest area in the world? Must the hunger become anger and anger fury before anything will be done?"

This man's cold vision of California seems almost prophetic in the sense that what he said a long time ago has much to do with how California has come to be today.

I think the following link will provide useful as an example of what I understand from the reading to be GETTING SOMETHING DONE THE HARD WAY.

LOS ANGELES UPRISING WIKIPEDIA LINK

At this moment, several lyrics by the contraversial rapper Tupac Shakur ring true. Several songs including "To Live and Die In LA" and "Changes" echo a memory of an LA in Flames at the request for PROFOUND CHANGE.

I have included links to the lyrics of these songs. I emphasize that the words put forth are not necessarily the beliefs of neither myself nor the poet. They are merely REFLECTIONS /POETRY that allow a "different" perspective.
