Hi Guys,
- Thank you all for the wonderful afternoon/evening on Friday. The images/videos/sounds I have seen so far show great potential. I'm sort of still introducing you to the main conceptual, social, creative issues and getting you familiar with the basic tool set. I really need you to become familiar and in control of all the phone capabilities, and our basic set of online collaborative applications ASAP. This coming Friday we will move into GIS-Media strategies and other more sophisticated software. So I really need you to spend sometime with your phone and its manual and make sure you understand and can control all of the built in applications.
- I also need you to understand and be able to add/edit content to the wiki site. Please go to the help section and look through the "User's Guide". If you want to play around go to you personal page and go wild. I have created a personal page for each of you to do so. For right now they are all empty waiting for you to put something in. To go to your personal wiki page go to the class wiki:
http://la.remap.ucla.edu/engage
- then click on "Community" on the left navigation bar. Then click on "Engaged Media Workshop Roster", and then click on your name. And there it is. An empty wiki page with your first name as its main title. To start adding content to it, click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page. After adding or editing content, always remember to click on "Save page" at the bottom of the page. Here is a list of the things you should try to learn and practice using the "User's Guide" and your personal wiki page:
- 1. add, edit, erase text.
- 2. format text (size, color, bold, underline, etc.)
- 3. create headings of different sizes.
- 4. create a bullet list
- 5. create a numbered bullet list
- 6. create a simple table
- 7. create a new wiki page
- 8. create links to other wiki pages
- 9. create links to external websites.
- 10. upload images and place them in a page
- The other environment I have introduced you to and need you to explore it and learn it as much as possible is Gallery2. Gallery2 is easier to use than the wiki, basically all you need to be able to do for now is:
- 1. upload images to the appropriate folder
- 2. label the images in a thoughtful way by using the "Title", "Summary", "Keywords", and "Description" fields. This is essential for the future use of the images/videos/sounds in a meaningful way. One of the key capacities of these environments is the possibility of working with "relational structures of emergent meaning". For this emergence to be possible the "media constellation" needs to be well characterized. Each component needs to have an identity made relevant relational junctures. This is one of the key things we will be dealing with tomorrow in class.
- Just in case you don't remember how to upload your images to the Engage Gallery I'll send you brief instructions in a separate email.
- Ufffff, this is way too much writing, sorry, I just don't know a better way to get where we need to get in the next couple of weeks. Remember, if you are having a hard time and need a special session to catch up, or want to come over sometime so I help you out, just let me know.
- OK, more in a little while.
Fabian
