California, and Los Angeles in particular, is one of the most diverse places in the world. Many people who come to the United States find themselves trying to carve a new life for themselves in Los Angeles. My Mother's side of the family came from Bangkok, Thailand in 1960. My Grandparents and their 8 children landed in Hollywood and assimilated the best they could. Below are pictures of their life in Thailand and their life here. I had not seen these until recently, and I have become rather fascinated by the actual photographic proof of their assimilation into American mainstream society. A future project I am thinking about doing now consists of gathering before and after pictures from a variety of families that have moved to Los Angeles from other countries to collectively document the experience of assimilation and change.
