[edit] Connecting & Controlling the N80 to a PC computer

To connect to and control the Nokia N80 functions from a desktop computer you must install the Nokia PC Suite on each computer you plan to connect the N80 to. You can both connect a Nokia N80 to multiple computers at different times and connect multiple Nokia N80s to a single computer. You just have to make sure that any computer you plan to use for such purposes has the Nokia PC Suite software install.

READ #1: do not use the software in the CD included with your Nokia N80. Make sure to download the latest version of the Nokia PC Suite from Nokia's web site.

READ #2: make sure to NOT have the N80 connected to the computer while installing the Nokia PC Suite software.

1. Download the latest version of the Nokia PC Suite software from:

  • 1a. On that page, click on "Download PC Suite"
  • 1b. Select the option:
No, I know my phone and PC are compatible with version 6.82, ...
  • 1c. Select English and click on DOWNLOAD.
  • 1d. In the "Open/Save" dialogue box, make sure to select Save to Disk and click OK.
  • 1d. In the save to... selection box choose a destination folder you'll remember and later be able to find.
(something like C:\downloads\Nokia)

2. Install the downloaded software:

  • 2a. Find and open the folder where you downloaded the Nokia PC Suite (see step 1d. above).
  • 2b. Find and double click on the file Nokia_PC_Suite_682_rel_22_0_eng_us_web.msi
The Windows Installer will indicate preparing to install.
  • 2c. Once the Nokia PC Suite installer starts, you will see a welcome message. Click NEXT.
  • 2d. Read the Lincense Agreement and select:
I accept the terms in the licence agreement.
  • 2e. Next the installer indicates a default installation location, usually:
C:\Program Files\Nokia\
That's a good place, leave it untouch and click INSTALL. (you can change the install location if you know what you are doing).
The installer will take a few minutes to complete the process. Be patient.
  • 2f. Once done the installer will indicate:
Installation Wizard Completed
Click Finish
The Nokia PC Suite - Get Connected Wizard will launch automatically.
If it doesn't go to the installation location selected in step 2e.
(probably C:\Program Files\Nokia\, open the folder Nokia PC Suite 6 and double click on GetConnected.exe.

[edit] Connecting the N80 to a computer with Nokia PC Suite:

  • 3a. If you are connecting for the first time after installing the Nokia PC Suite on your computer for the first time. On your desktop you will see the Get Connected welcome window. Click Next.
  • 3b.You will now see the Select the connection type screen.
There are three ways you can connect the device to your computer:
  • USB - using the cable included with your N80 package.
  • Infrared - many laptops have Infrared capability. This is an optical way of connecting which requires a direct line of sight between the Infrared transmitters/readers in each machine.
  • Bluetooth - this is a machine to machine wireless conection. Most laptops now come with Bluetooth.
I find USB to be the easiest way of connecting, specially the first time.
select Cable connection, and click on Next.
  • 3c. You should now be at the Connect cabel screen.
IT IS TIME TO CONNECT YOUR N80 TO YOUR COMPUTER.
connect the Nokia USB cable to the N80 and your computer. in that order.
  • 3d. as soon as you plug the cable into your computer you will hear a beep on the phone and a selection menu will show up on the phone's screen with the following options:
Media Player
PC Suite
Data Transfer
PictBridge
select PC Suite (on your phone)
  • 3e. The Connection setup complete screen will automatically appear on your computer screen, and your phone should be listed in the connections available window. Just click Finish
  • "The NOKIA PC Suite" applications window should now be available on your computer. Each of the listed applications gives you specific data transfer, data creation, and set up configuration options for managing your N80 and your data in it.
