[murmur] is an intimate and innovative approach to discovering the life of a neighbourhood. Via their cell phones, visitors and passers-by will be able to listen to histories, personal stories and anecdotes about a place while in that place, told by those who live in or are connected to the neighbourhood. Signs placed in sites throughout the area will indicate the presence of a story and a number that can be dialed to access it. The stories, lasting between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, will give visitors an insight into the personal relationship people have with the spaces they inhabit, and a chance to rediscover the space in a new way. The location of stories and other information on these activities will be posted on the terminus1525 web site, www.terminus.1525.ca and on the [murmur] website, www.murmurtoronto.ca.
experience, subconsciously coloring our perception of a place. Yet such features are inherently unrepeatable, unique to every individual's listening experience, and, unlike a photograph, the location of a recording is difficult to recognize. 'Placing Voices' is a mobile-sound-blog software which uses the built-in sound recording feature of mobile phones (which is optimized for voice) and MMS messaging to place these fragments on a web-accessible map of the city as they occur. The objective is to express a map in terms of these experiences, to restore some claim to my memory of physical spaces over the transient voices heard within them. (Submit Comments)
