Uploading Sound from the Nokia N80 to the Engage Gallery Site

OK. For the adventurous and strong of heart.

  • The main thing about using the Nokia N80 "Voice Recorder Utility" is that it produces a file format particular to cell phones but not good for much else. Later in the class we will install other sound recording applications that do not present this problem. But for now, before you can upload a playable file to the Engage Gallery Site you need to convert the ".amr" files the "Voice Recorder Utility" generates to something more universable and streamable.

  • MP3s work best for me. They are easy to make and they play nicely straight out of Gallery.

  • The next question is how to do that for free and with resonable amount of control.

  • For now I'm using two pieces of software.

  • First I convert the .amr to a .wav using MIKSOFT Mobile AMR converter

  • Then I import the converted .wav into "Audacity" (A Free Digital Audio Editor). In "Audacity" I edit and tweak the sound. When I'm done, "Audacity" lets me export the sound as an MP3.

  • You can then upload the MP3 to the Engage Gallery Site. A "sound file" icon is automatically assigned to the file.

  • When people click on that "sound file icon" a "download audio" link appears, but if people have either Quicktime or Windows Media install clicking on that link will stream the file to the desktop.
