[edit] Noise
LA is full of noise. You forget that its there, you block it out. After filtering the noise for so long you make your self believe that it doesn't exist, so even when you try to hear it, its not there. How then do you experience it? For me, I move outside the noise. I move to a place of "silence" like the hills or back home, maybe even just go to a place with different types of noise. In this silence or contrast, you realize the noise. Everyday it becomes more difficult because the noise is beginning to balance out and homogenize.
[edit] Types of Noise
- Distrust
- Prohibitions
Everywhere you look these days, there are signs telling you that you can't do this or that, but there really is no good reason that you should. I feel like any time I want to do something out of the ordinary that it makes me think to myself "is there a law against that?". These nonsensical restrictions really create a world of confinement. As soon as one person screws something up, a new rule is made. There aren't any second chances.
- Language
Language a noise that most try to ignore. They refuse to acknowledge the barrier it creates and when confronted with it, blame someone else. It is a noise that I have never filtered because I find that more power is gained by embracing it. By learning to take this noise and turn it into something that is not you gain power through respect and understand both of the other culture and of yourself.
- Plants
LA began as a desert, not some luscious beach resort. Yet the grass is everywhere, draining the rivers of one of earths most valuable resources. The paradox of green noise. With out all the plants, we wouldn't survive the gases that our automobiles and factories create. Soon these survival plants will steal away something else we use to survive.
